“Combining a young voice with old music, Tennessee is an album worth picking up, along with a fifth of whiskey and a couple packs of smokes.” -Flash magazine Lauded for their “achingly beautiful songs” (Memphis Flyer), Lucero quickly became a fixture in their hometown’s distinctive music scene. It wasn’t long before they connected with like-minded rockers Cody and Luther Dickinson (founders of the North Mississippi Allstars and sons of legendary producer Jim Dickinson). The mutual respect between the musicians led to Lucero recording both their previous and new CDs at Zebra Ranch, the Dickinson family studio, with Cody in the producer’s seat each time. His collaboration with the group extended to playing B-3 organ and piano on Tennessee and joining the band frequently onstage. Lucero singer/guitarist Ben Nichols summed up the band’s ethos to Mark Jordan of the Memphis Flyer: “Simplicity is key. You look at Johnny Cash and it’s simple and direct, and it speaks straight to the heart because of it.” Added drummer Roy Berry, “We’re not showmen, we’re storytellers. Music got away from storytelling…and we’re bringing it back.” Lucero is Ben Nichols (vocals, guitar), Brian Venable (guitar), Roy Berry (drums), John Stubblefield (bass) and Cody Dickinson (piano, organ).
